Early Years: Shaping a mindset for cultural differences
Born in Scotland but destined for a life beyond borders, Stephen embarked on a truly global journey at just nine months old, moving to Bahrain with his family for his father’s job. This early introduction to international living sparked a lifelong passion for exploring diverse cultures, ways of thinking, and business landscapes. Growing up across several countries, including Puerto Rico, Abu Dhabi, Canada, and Dubai, Stephen developed a unique global perspective that has become a cornerstone of his professional success.
A Diverse Path Through the World of Telecoms and Fintech
Beginning his career in the UK as a Corporate Sales professional in the Telecoms sector, Stephen quickly demonstrated a knack for understanding complex market needs and building strong client relationships. His passion for innovation led him to Qatar, where he spearheaded the launch of a pioneering “Mobile Money/Digital Wallet” business for Ooredoo, a breakthrough in the region's digital payment landscape.
Continuing his trailblazing journey, he took on a leadership role in Myanmar with Wave Money, guiding the product division for a leading Fintech company. His expertise and strategic vision helped drive the company’s rapid growth in a challenging, emerging market.
Back in the UK, Stephen played a pivotal role in launching and expanding a fintech's operations in Argentina, Nigeria, and Vietnam. His global mindset and deep understanding of local markets ensured these ventures were tailored to meet unique regional demands, resulting in successful product launches.
Strategic Leadership and Collaboration with Industry Giants
Rising to the role of Vice President of Product at Barclays, Stephen collaborated closely with C-suite executives to craft and execute innovative strategies that redefined the bank’s digital product offerings. His strategic insights and hands-on leadership style were instrumental in shaping the future of digital payments.
From Barclays, he moved to Dubai, where he became the Group Head of Digital Payments for Alshaya Group, a major conglomerate with a diverse portfolio spanning retail, hospitality, and more. In this role, he directed multiple teams and divisions, bringing a strategic vision to the company's payment solutions and enhancing the customer experience across various business units.
Returning to the UK, Stephen took on the role of Chief Product Officer for a global payment service provider, where he oversaw the development and implementation of cutting-edge digital products that have set new benchmarks in the industry.
